Post Subaru (Legacy) Outback chassis codes/designations and general info

Just an informational thread regarding the Outback, which generations are in-line with what generation Legacy, and chassis codes.

The Outback in the USA was originally a 1995 model year Legacy L with a body appearance package much like the Impreza Outback Sport. The first "true" model year of the Outback began in the 1996 model year which actually had the raised suspension that the Outback's higher ground clearance is known for. The Outback continues to use the same line code and chassis as the Legacy.

The Outback in Japan up until the latter end of the Outback's 2nd gen (3rd gen Legacy-based) was called the Subaru Lancaster.

Generations of Outback begin with the second generation Legacy. So corresponding generations between Outback and Legacy are as follows:
1st generation Outback = 2nd generation Legacy
2nd generation Outback = 3rd generation Legacy
3rd generation Outback = 4th generation Legacy
4th generation Outback = 5th generation Legacy
5th generation Outback = 6th generation Legacy

There was no Outback version of the 1st generation Legacy.

Historically, the Outback has almost exclusively been made with the 5-door wagon bodystyle.
However, there are some markets (such as the USA) that did get the Outback sedan, or in some regions, named the "Legacy X" or "Liberty X" such as in Australia.

The majority of Outback sedans have been produced and sold in the USA. Some sources indicate a good portion of them were sold in the east coast.

1st gen Outback (2nd gen Legacy-based) bodystyles:
4-door sedan
5-door wagon raised roof
2nd gen Outback (3rd gen Legacy-based) bodystyles:
4-door sedan
5-door wagon raised roof
3rd gen Outback (4th gen Legacy-based) bodystyles:
4-door sedan
5-door wagon
4th gen Outback (5th gen Legacy-based) bodystyles:
4-door sedan (as the "Legacy X" and "Liberty X" in Chinese and Australian markets respectively)
5-door wagon

Chassis code on a Subaru vehicle can be found within the vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Fourth and fifth digits are the two digits that designate your chassis code.

For example:
JF1 GPA XXXXXXXXXXX

The "GP" in the VIN indicates:
G = Impreza
P = fourth generation 5-door hatchback

The "G" in the fourth digit indicates the Impreza line.

The fifth digit (in the above case, the "P") indicates the generation and body style.
