Default Rooftop tent

Good morning everyone
Does anyone know the rooftop capacity of the XV. I was thinking about getting a rooftop tent such as the jamesbaroud.com discovery tent. I've seen sites in which people put those kinds of tents on the top of an outback or Forrester but no one seems to have done it yet on a crosstrek. Any thoughts?

My fibreglass Columbus rooftop tent weighs 60kg, so it's within the dynamic weight limit on the rails. I wouldn't put any more up there, as this 60kg lump turns into substantially more when you're off road and the car is jumping about. Inertia turns that 60kg into hundreds of kg when you hit a large pothole or corrugations. Add to it your weight and someone else's, and your 60 kg turns into 200. If i were sticking to well constructed roads then I'd have no hesitation in putting mine up there.

No, not exactly the one pictured above but more like these ones. I understand there is a dynamic load limit (150) but I was trying to figure out the static load limit. Tent is around 100lb and me and the wife would be like 300lbs or under together. Is that too much weight?

I think its doable for sure.... you are not point-loading the roof. I am not sure of the roof capacity, but 300-350lbs sounds like it's in the ballpark. There are a few nice rooftop tents out there.... good luck with it!

Omaroo..... yes... we see your posts.... got any pics of the setup? 8)

Hey XVDC....The pic you show appears as if some of the weight is supported away from the roof of that Toyota. That can only help with weight distribution if you intend on setting up that way. I say go for it. IMO, the roof weight limit of 150 lb is expandable....almost certainly engineered to go beyond that lb. limit when static.

I hear you. How they ever greenlighted that albatros is beyond me. People will buy "quirky", cute, different, and practical vehicles. As GM and Pontiac found out, they will not buy Fugly.
