I have a 2015 Crosstrek with the Thule square bar base racks.
Thule Square Bar Base Rack System - FREE SHIPPING
These are very sturdy. They sell mounts for bikes and Kayaks, but I'm sure they're sturdy enough to carry a canoe on if you really wanted. They have a nice locking system and you can often find them used on craigslist/FB marketplace/LetGo for much cheaper than new, often with extra mounts included.
The key to making them great is reducing the wind noise. This works on any roof rack, just wrap a bungee cord or rope around the rack like in this pic: EDIT:
This is not the Thule system, just a general example.
. Gets rid of 95% of the noise for me.
