Hi, I just took delivery this week of a 2019 Crosstrek Limited (Quartz Blue Pearl, everything but nav and moonroof), my very first new vehicle ever (and probably ever). Now I'm faced with deciding which if any warranties to purchase. Money is an object, I can't really just say "yes" to all of them. I intend on having the car for a very long time but I only drive about 6,000 miles per year at the most so in ten years, I'll only be at 60k miles. Here's what's being offered by the dealer (and the prices):
* Automotive Preferred Care+Plus: parts and labor on covered repairs (almost everything except wear items, glass, tires and wheels), 10 years/120k miles, $200 deductible, $2,150 (regularly $2,895)
* Clear Shield: urethane shield applied to front vehicle surfaces to protect from road debris, $999 (seems unnecessary)
* Vehicle Appearance Protection: ceramic paint protection and interior fabric/leather, $999 (is that really necessary? note that my car is parked outside all the time)
* Ultimate Titanium Protection: tire and wheels coverage, dent and ding repair (no paint), windshield chip repair, smart key replacement for up to 5 years, $1,196
What do you all think? Any of the coverages? Are the prices good or high? Am I better off just saving some money for any future repairs?
As above, I would not get any. They are available aftermarket much cheaper if you change your mind, but with the mileage you expect to drive, none of them are worth it or needed.
FYI: You have right up until the 3yr/36k warranty expires (not after) to purchase a warranty. Shop around, you can find better prices for a Subaru one.
Change your oil hot and early. I’m doing changes every 5 k kilometres.
But in the past I have done 4 k.
Warm up the car before reviving it and idle down searing temperatures from highway driving on hot summer days.
I also use premium.
I personally got the Subaru extended warranty which doubles the factory one with a 250$ deductible. Not cheap mind you but I figured that a fully loaded limited and all it’s electronics would be a money pit if any gremlins started to appear.
In Canada we get fewer standard features than Americans and also a poorer warranty.
Apparently there’s more competition in the US and Subaru isn’t concerned with fairness.
Sorry about the end bit i’m just another ripped off Canadian.
Thank you for all of the replies. I'm definitely going to shop the genuine Subaru warranty plans. I may go "bare" given my low annual mileage--in 10 years, I might only reach 50,000 miles.
Go "bare" and drive carefully. You may be able to add some desirable coverages to your regular auto insurance, but I doubt even that would be worthwhile. It rarely pays to be too risk-averse.
I think my main worry is the electronic Eyesight and Starlink systems. That coverage only comes with the deluxe plans that also include the mechanical stuff.
I just got a rock embed and explode in a 2019 outback window. The higher models have hollow/laminated/sound absorbing front windshields. Quiet ride but at a price!
I have done exhausting searching and have found out that better aftermarket windows actually exist!
People are actually after marketing their windshields!
You can get an Owen’s Corning gorilla glass replacement for the ford f 150 !
The stone catching Subaru window costs about a grand to replace here in Canada.
The good news
The system detects a new windshield and turns off eyesight the command is issued for the system to know there’s a new window and to learn it. That’s where the final phase comes in it’s a “test drive”.
Any window could be placed at any angle and if the system is “allowed” just a careful drive resets it.
IMHO there is lots of room for aftermarket front glass, after a magic software “wave” calibration is a mere test drive away.
Bring on after market glass!
Windshield replacement is covered by your auto insurance comprehensive portion (not Collision).
Additionally, most of the major insurers waive the deductible for replacement due to road /rock damages.
YMMV
Yeah, I just learned about the comprehensive covers windows thing today!
So, at the moment, I've decided just to stick with the 3 years/36K miles standard warranty for now. If I end up having the car for 10 or more years, given my yearly mileage, I'll probably spend less than with any extended warranty (OEM or 3rd party).
All of my fingers and toes are crossed on *that* bet!

I would suggest that you wait until your manufacturer warranty is close to expiring and make that decision. I have purchased several extended warranties in the past and never needed to use any of them.
