I found it! I *knew* I had seen that "mystery" compartment on an XV before! (Hey.. maybe Granny's memory ain't so bad after all). LOL
I think it's on non-US models-front passenger door side. They don't seem to have the door lock button (or maybe its an upgrade for them).
So here's some comparison shots:
1.) Shot of my car - front passenger door. All it has is the cubby, the door lock and the window button.
2.) Shot of Scoob's car (he's in OZ... thank you Scoob!) - front passenger door. Notice that car doesn't have the door lock button. So that's the "missing" compartment.

Such a simple idea that just works! These things are great.
What's really funny is, though here we don't have that "empty" compartment, so we end up with a left over piece.. what they do *not* provide is mats for the cup holders in the back seat pull-down arm rest! They must have missed those... Heck.. I did. I didn't even realize the XV had those until this weekend. Ha!
