As of late, we have been getting hit with a lot of spam on the boards. They seem to target the newest topic and post links/images/text that is completely irrelevant and in horribly broken english. I believe this is because the board is becoming more popular and getting higher page ranks on search engines.
The problem with these spammers, however, is that they are not bots, but in fact people, probably paid 10 cents a day, that log on and post. Because they are real people, they can generally pass the CAPTCHA at registration and continue to post.
To help stop or slow the prevalence of spam, we have implemented a few new security walls:
1. Any user with under 10 posts will have to pass CAPTCHA each time they make a new topic or reply. I know that can be frustrating but that is the point.
2. Any user with under 5 posts will not be able to post any type of external link. What's the point of spamming if you can't link to your scam?
3. Askimet Spam Protection. Askimet is basically a database of known/common/popular spam sites/users/text/etc. The Askimet Spam Protection Mod will automatically read each new topic/post and check its contents against their database to make sure everything comes out clean. If they detect something as spam, the post will be marked as such and will not be readable until an admin approves it. I have not used such a modification in the past so I am not sure of it's effectiveness but I am willing to give it a try and keep my fingers crossed.
4. Added Nov. 2012. Signature restrictions. We don't mind if you add a link or image to your signature as long as it doesn't directly compete with ClubCrosstrek.com, our affiliates, or our vendors. However, we have restricted the post limit you must reach in order to have a link/image in your signature to 25. This is to prevent new users with no posts or contributions to the forum from using ClubCrosstrek as a place to spam their personal website.
For now that is what we have done. As the board grows and new problems arise, we will tackle them one by one and hopefully run off the bulk of the spammers.
