'18 CVT stuck in reverse

Long time lurker, first time poster! lol
My wife was out in her Crosstrek a couple days ago. She backed into a parking space and put it in park. When she took her foot off the brake, it kept backing up. Put it in drive, once again it still backed up. Back to park, it backed up more. Once cutting the car off and restarting it was fine. I have done some searching and have not found any other reports of this happening. Car has 75k miles and has been well cared for.

Any ideas on this one?
Thanks guys!

I had the exact same thing happen to me once but in my Honda Element, freaked the crap out of me because I was trying to park in a busy city section at the time. After turning the car off and on again the problem resolved itself and never happened again. I recall trying to research it (this was a few years ago) and coming up with nothing. I'd be curious to hear what you find, but hopefully that was the first and last time you experience it!
Sounds like an electrical problem of some sort? The gear shift lever, paddle shifter & lockout would all be connected, i think.

Shutting off & restart may be tne easy fix. Reboot, lol. But not funny if when releasing the brake, car hits something.
Intermitting problems are not easy to find for a mechanic.

At start up below freezing, my 2019 crosstrek cvt takes longer to make the shift from reverse to drive. Thick transmission oil.

2016 Legacy Stuck in Reverse See post 1 & 16. CVT replaced.

Check for recalls- Recalls | NHTSA
Car has been doing fine since initial fiasco. I am not sure if something in the valve body stuck temporarily or what? I was already planning on flushing the trans next oil change. (preventive maintenance) Might look at the '24s while I am there. Local dealer doesn't have any Pure Red ones on the lot though, so I would have to order it. I would just as soon keep my '18, but if something in the trans is about to bite the big one....
I think the 18's had the warranty extended to 100k, but I am not positive on that. Also I was a Toyota tech from 94-02 and can tell you if we could not duplicate the condition, or have a TSB on it, we couldn't replace anything. So unless it starts acting up regular I am just left wondering.

Since that happening could cause a risk of accident and injury I would definitely get it documented through the dealership and would even consider a letter to SOA documenting it with them. Even if they cannot find anything there's at least a written record of the problem occurring. Love to hear what if anything you find out! That's one potentially scary problem!
