What kind of off-road we talking about?

Most opt for an all-terrain for that happy middle-ground for blended performance on and off-road. If you're talking about an all-out mud-terrain tire, your options are severely limited, if nonexistant.


For what I've seen, the majority that go for the all-terrains with a suspension lift go for either the General Grabber AT2 or the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO (or new KO2 variant).

However, I personally believe the Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S in 215/60R17 is the perfect tire that complements the Subaru XV Crosstrek's strengths and intended use. Thing is, the A/T-S has met the end of its production cycle and is now replaced by the Geolandar A/T G015, which the closest to stock tire size would be 225/65R17, a bit bigger than stock.


If you want to retain road manners and comfort, I highly recommend you go with the Yokohama all-terrain tires. If you're willing to trade fuel economy for better snow and off-road performance, the General and BFG tires will be a better choice.

Stock tire size for the GP-chassis Subaru XV Crosstrek (North American model years 2013-2017) is P225/55R17 with a load and speed rating of 95H.

The UTQG is as follows for the stock Yokohama Geolandar G95A:
320 Treadwear
B Traction
A Temperature

It would be best to try to choose a tire that meets or exceeds the stock tire's:
  • Load rating of 95; 1521 lbs per tire; tire is an SL, standard load rating
  • Speed rating of H, 130 MPH
  • Traction rating of B
  • Temperature rating of A

I highly recommend the Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S 215/60R17. I put them on last summer and there has been a definite improvement in both dirt and snow.

Since they're more knobby than the OEM's they do produce more noise, but the trade off is worth it if extra traction is what you want.

Have you seen a drop in your mpg with the A/T-S tires? Seriously considering these as my next go-to tire

If it helps you to know, the one time I decided to go all-out in maximizing my Subaru's MPG with driving style and technique alone, I had the A/T-S in that size, 215/60R17 on along with the "weighs a ton" emergency kit in my back.

To my own surprise, I managed 40.2 MPG on that 120 mile drive home despite the extra weight of the kit, chassis bracing, skid plates, and all-terrain tires. This is NOT a typical result, but still surprising to me considering the factors working against me at the time.

But, bear in mind the all-terrain tires present a slight MPG loss, minor with the A/T-s and its successor, the G015. The more-aggressive all-terrains are likely to see a more significant penalty such as the General Grabber AT2 and BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2.

I just put a set of Geolandar AT/S, size 225/60 R17 on my stock '15 Crosstrek. They are just fine. I don't notice any difference in road noise or on-road performance as compared to my OEM Yoko's. I haven't had a chance to test it offroad yet but I am sure it will be fine. The only adverse thing I noticed is that when I have 4 people in the car and I hit a bump, they rub for a second. Other than that, totally happy with them. I guess that minor rub gives me an excuse to throw on a 2" spacer lift! LOL

I have a 2017 crosstrek, and want to get a set off of road tires for baja. do you recommend the Geolanders with a 2 inch lift?

If you're primarily driving in the sand, stock tires could potentially be better.

I've found tires used in sandy Baja terrain in competition sometimes tend to be less like mud-terrains and more like mild all-terrains. For example, the BFGoodrich Baja T/A's base design even resembles a conventional road-legal all-season tire.

But if you are considering keeping a compromise, master-of-none, all-around tire, the all-terrain Geolandar tires (A/T-S G012 or the newer A/T G015) will do fine.
