I have a 2015 Crosstrek and would like the CVT drained and filled since I keep my vehicles for 10 or more years. Many forums list the Subaru way of way of draining, filling, and checking while the engine is running and cycling through the gears, but feel there must be a better way.

I have read and seen videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7QLRMIl_bs 1:08 timestamp) that reference when changing the front differential fluid that some people have made the mistake of using the plug (see photo) on the driver’s (left) side beside the axle and put 75w90 into the CVT. My question is, if that plug goes directly into the CVT and contaminates the CVT, then why can’t that be used when doing a drain and fill? I understand that the fluid must be at the exact level to ensure proper operation. If that plug can be used then I would ensure that the drained fluid would be allowed to stabilize to the same temperature before measuring and refilling the CVT.

BTW the above video linked is referencing Australia vehicles for driver and passenger sides but the CVT is the same as US models.
