2017. Cvt. From a stop give it regular pedal and you can feel it "shift"
Immediately to What would be "second" gear. Making the car a sloth off the line under regular pedestrian gas pedal pressure. It shifts at about 1.5k rpm.

Now if I floor it or give it decent amount of throttle it goes all the way through, and if I manny tranny it it will hold "first". I'm wondering if everyone's does this, or if I need to take it in.

Yeah, mine kinda does that. Which confused me at first, since it's supposed to be a CVT. But the general public apparently doesn't like the feel of a CVT, so they program these "shift points," which pretty much destroy any benefit of a CVT.

Rolling into the throttle tends to help. And I've also heard that you can go in and they can load in a slightly different TCM map to change the shift points.

I was wondering if it was done to save mpg. And hoping it wasn't a flaw. I don't remember it doing this, but when a car is so new there are a lot of things you don't notice right away.

When I had my loaner 2017, I did that and it performed nicely.

But the pre-programmed "gears" that work in automatic mode (not the manual shift mode) annoyed me since... it does do away with the CVT advantages.


I did multiple launches in that loaner, and sometimes it would use the virtual gears, and other launches, it would be full-CVT.


As for transmission codes, I presume an SSM is needed to look into that.

It's just the nature of CVT. Not only Subaru but the Korean built one for Chevy Spark also does it. It's a little annoying at first but you will get used to it.

BTW, I know a few of my Asian friends do this when they drive their manual. From dead stop to rolling, they quickly shift the darn gear to 2nd and rev it up then shift to 3rd. My point is the time they "hang" on the 2nd gear is longer then most other ones. I don't know why, but they all do it. So maybe the Subaru engineer who programed the CVT is one of those people.

Yeah,I told the service manager that those shift points defeat the purpose of using a CVT and he agreed completely.It makes me want to hold on to my '16 that much more.
