Car goes or it don't. Never had a transmission quit on Subarus or other brands. If 1 of my Subaru transmission quits, its then Toyota time.
Never did like the Subaru engine design. Oval pistons/cylinders, weird.

I have a toyota and the transmission is maintenance free. No dip stick and no oil change needed .

I have a Subaru Outback Impreza Sport 2001 it is running with no knocking noises, manual trans, motor has 263,000+ miles on it, been across the US numerous times with it. But my b/f 1999 Subaru Legacy the tranny went in it, we had to get another used one, then the motor went it is a DOHC and the other motor we got is a SOHC not sure if wiring will work for it, so we havent attempted to put it in yet until a true mechanic can let us know for sure. But the newer Subarus's are not much good. The Crosstrek my daughter has is a complete nightmare. Subaru doesnt want to take responsibility for the problem. They say oh it must be a short in the wire somewhere, well no kidding.......fix it, headlights go out about every 17 days $30.00 each one and a trip to Subaru. But losing your headlights is not a safety issue according to them!!! So we have been looking up Lemon Law Lawyers and it mentions Subarus first...Just call 800 536 6652. It started happening before warrenty was up. But now they say oh it's over 100,000 miles, well no crap, cuz you people kept putting off fixing it!!! Basically so deal with it!!! I like the manual trannys for these cars better than the automatics. Christina

Just thought I would chime in and add that actually, Subaru is nearly 1/3 owned by Toyota.

Both makers have top ratings for reliability and consistency.
And hello everyone. just got my first Crosstrek 4 days ago :)

1) Transmissions don't usually die without any sort of warning signs. Maybe you missed an issue.
2) Subaru extended the warranty on the CVTs to 100k miles.
