yes I'm running synthetic. I drive close to 100 miles a day, sometimes a little more. Is there ANY advantage to me running a high mileage synthetic blend over the regular synthetic?

Or is there a particular brand of synthetic I should use over another?

Considering the FB20 was designed primarily with full synthetic engine oils in mind, I would avoid using an engine oil with conventional base stock. It's not unsafe, but it likely won't last nearly as long as a full synthetic.


There are some high-tier, high price engine oils designed to last long and be used for severe-duty use. Some good ones include Eneos Sustina, Motul, and Pennzoil Ultra. There's quite a lot more high quality, extended life oils I haven't mentioned.

I would personally recommend to just continue to follow your service manual's oil change interval. To put things in perspective, I drive about 3700-3800 miles every 3 weeks so I change my oil every 6 weeks [2013-2014 model years have 7500 mile regular service OCI, 3750 miles severe service OCI]. Also, 2015 and newer model years have a 6000 mile OCI regular service, 3000 mile OCI severe service.


But if you have your mind set on extended oil change intervals, consider getting a good oil filter that meets Subaru OEM specs such a Purolator.

Also, if you don't use full synthetic oil, it voids your power train warranty. I'd recommend sticking to synthetic...

All synthetic motor oil brands, do basically meet Subaru oil specifications. It's a very good durable oil that gives you added protection. That's what car manufacturers want. With that said I ether get it on sale or Walmart brand $18 for 5 qts. Found this article online of testing different motor oils. That are offer off the shelf at any auto supply store. Even tho it was done in 06 it was very interesting how they tested them. Royal Purple R51 came on top at $35 for 5 qt jug. http://www.animegame.com/cars/Oil Tests.pdf

Although I am running a high quality oil filter and full synthetic right now, I have been looking at switching to an extended service oil (such as Mobil 1's 15k extended performance). At the 6k interval I'm changing oil every week and a half. If I switch to an extended service oil change I would only have to change my oil every 3 weeks (12,000 miles) and I would save almost $400 a year.
Do you or have you heard of anyone having experience with this oil?

Since your vehicle specifies a 6000 mile oil change interval, I would ease into it each oil change, such as starting with a 7000/8000 OCI and going up according to your used engine oil analysis'. It may be a necessity to get your used engine oil checked by a laboratory such as Blackstone Labs (which is what I use).

Based on each analysis, it may be able to determine what will be your optimal OCI.

That's exactly what I was thinking;
8k oil change then oil analysis.
12k oil change and another oil analysis.
I don't drive anything that would be considered extreme service so I would follow up with oil analysis every 6 months.
