There are a few small nicks in the paint of my white 2013 Crosstrek. I purchased some touch up paint from the dealer. There are two bottles in the box - both exactly the same - Code No. 37J Satin White Pearl Part No. J361SAG040BC.

The instruction are:
Step 1: Clean surface
Step 2: Apply Basecoat Color
Step 3: Apply Topcoat Color

Why is there a difference between Basecoat and Topcoat? Is the same product for both in my case, but not for other cars?

I don't know anything about car paint, so any info/tips would be appreciated.

My cross trek is the same satin white. If you look closely you will notice it isn't just a solid color. It has a pearlescent shimmer to it. To achieve the proper match you have to apply the white base cost and then the pearlescent top coat next to get that reflective shimmer.

I am just assuming here but I am a furniture refinished by trade and many finishes require multiple steps.

Sounds like posts above are spot on. :)

I have the White Pearl too. Those pearl paint jobs are actually a 3-phase paint process they do to get it to look like it does.. which comes out even more unique on the White Pearl, which in the end is not a stark white. I think you were smart to get your touch up kit from the dealer and if it were me... I'd use as directed. When I got done with that.... I'd head back to the dealer and look in to getting a clear bra put on the car as that would certainly solve the need to have to do many more touch ups.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
