Wolverine, any new updates? How far from half a million are you?
A pretty uneventful couple of months. Coming up on my 2 year anniversary and only 381,000 miles so far but I'm working on it ?.
I just finished replacing front struts, strut mounts and rear shocks for the first time and only because I thought the right strut mount was getting a little noisy. The ride was still good. Amazingly enough, I didn't notice any difference in the ride afterwards.

Hi Wolverine, hey I had a question after reading the last 13 pages. What have you been doing for regular service intervals? Timing chain? Spark plugs? Wheel bearing repack? Have you changed any fluids beyond the oil? How about valve adjustments?

Unless the timing chain starts making racket at start up, it is left alone.
Spark plugs look great at 100k but I stick to that for a tune up.
Wheel bearings are sealed and not much you can do unless they start making noise, then you just pull and replace.
Oil changes are at 12,000 miles using Mobil 1's extended service oil and Fram's synthetic filter. I have an oil analysis every 100k to make sure it's doing what it's supposed to.
Transmission and rear differential fluids are changed at 60k.
Valves lifters are hydraulic so adjustment really isn't needed unless the valves start clacking, at that point you should just resolve you and your bank account to a head job.

About half a dozen times, over the past few months, I have gone out to gone out to my car to find the interior lights on and the hatch popped but not open. At first I thought someone was messing with me until it happened one time when I was just walking by. Creepy? Yes, until I began thinking about it and realized that the release actuator had become a little noiser and sluggish the last few weeks. Well, today the latch wouldn't release at all. The actuator finally quite and I've come to the conclusion that there is no ghost in the machine, just a defective actuator. Yes I was thinking the same thing, only 2 years? After a little figuring I came to the conclusion that with my job I have opened/closed that hatch about 12,000 times over the course of 2 years. I can live with that.
Now if I can just figure out why my phone plays 'Missing you' whenever I make a phone call ?.

Wow, a release actuator failure? I don't open and close my hatch nearly as much, so I haven't had that problem... yet.

Even without my old commute, I am still averaging a mileage rate of between 28,000 miles to 30,000 miles of driving a year. It still can't compare to yours (my old 60,000 miles a year on my old commute couldn't match it!), but at least your Subaru has proven to be relatively good to you so far. :)

Overall I'm still very satisfied.

Hi everyone. Just joined, this is my first post.

Wolverine, I just read all 13 pages straight through. I’ll echo two things: a) you’re comments sound like perfectly calm, rational observations, certainly not complaining or gripping; b) Thank you so much for taking the time to post all of these experiences for us.

My wife just bought a Crosstrek 2 days ago and I’ll be doing all the maintenance, so I’m very interested in knowing what to expect & to see how reliable it is.

If you don’t mind me asking, do you use a print or online repair manual, and if so, which one & where did you get it?

Keep the posts coming; we’re all enjoying them greatly.

Hi kcc and welcome to the forum. I'm glad you're enjoying this site as there is so much experience and knowledge to be found here. I'm also glad you're enjoying my posts and hope you find at least some of it helpful. Remember to post any experience you have whether good or bad so that others can benefit from it.
As far as a service manual, I have a print version that I found on ebay for a ridiculously low price but I seldom use it. Honestly the Crosstrek is a fairly simple car to work on and I rarely find the need for a manual. If you need images or information, there are many good people on this site that are waiting to help you. I do occasionally Google for specs if need be and the images I've seen from the digital manual are very good. I think either print or digital are just a matter of preference.

Hey Wolverine! just read through your updates, great info. I have a 2013 with 105k miles (which I thought was lot til I read yours!).

Just got word that one of my rear wheel bearings needs to be fixed and wanted to see if you had done that yet (looks like not?) - Is this related to driving style? or...?

Also, wondering if you need to add oil to your car between oil changes. I find that I need to add oil approx 1/2 way through my 7500 mile oil change interval...I've read previously that this is a common Subaru issue, but it doesn't seem like you are doing this?

Thanks for the great info!

Krista

Haven't had any issues with front or rear wheel bearings as of yet.
This car is definitely sensitive to oil usage depending on your driving habits. Usually I don't have to add any oil between my 12,000 mile oil changes but, when it's the windy season and I'm having to deal with a 50 mph headwind at freeway speeds, I have been known to add a quart between chages.

408,363 mile oil analysis report

OK guys, it's that time of year. Time to slip on the nitrile glove and put the finger up the drain hole. I just got back my bi-annual Blackstone oil analysis report and it still looks good. I only did a 10,800 mile oil change this time but this was just due to scheduling issues.

Wolverine, it’s been about 6 months since you replaced your last reverse light switch. Might be time for a new one . Anymore updates?
Yup, you're right on it and I'm slaking off. It is that time and I've been so busy I forgot to update. The reverse switch was failing again. Even using another brand it still began failing at 5 months. This time I opted for a bypass dash switch. Since I pull a sailboat on occasion, this also allows me to flip it on going down the highway just to get a glimpse of the trailer in motion. It works very well.

Come on Mike, give us an update? Why nothing since January? Sorry "Wolverine"......
