Over this past weekend I hit some trails in the woods around town to test out how the Crosstrek does off-road. I went with my cousin who a) has a lot of off-road experience (where as I do not) and b) was driving his Dodge Power Wagon which I knew could pull me out of anywhere that I may get stuck.
The trails consisted of mud, water, deep sand and some pretty steep, though short, inclines. Overall the Crosstrek did really, really well. I got everywhere the Power Wagon did (though I am NOT comparing the Crosstrek to the Power Wagon) and tackled the same inclines and water passings.
The Crosstrek's AWD preformed amazingly by doing exactly what they say it does: transferring the power to the wheel(s) that needs it most. I tested a couple of the same runs with and without traction control and, in my limited opinion, the Crosstrek preformed better with traction control left on. I believe this is because it will prevent the tires from constantly spinning when they have no grip, which could cause you to dig yourself deeper into the sand/mud. My cousin, again an avid off-roader with a Power Wagon and two Jeeps, was pretty impressed with how the Crosstrek did.
Here are some pictures and videos of our day. It is really hard to tell how deep, steep and high anything is in the pictures, but trust me when I say that everything was more intense in person.
Next weekend I am going to try it out on the beach and I will have another post outlining that.
