I thought I would add this post just in case others run into this issue.

After about a year I started hearing a squeaking noise from the rear of my 2017 Crosstrek. After removing everything from the trunk and replacing same I found that it was the styrofoam molded to hold the jack and tools located inside the spare tire. I removed the styrofoam mold and wrapped the jack and tools in a towel - and the squeak is gone.

I tried re-seating the styrofoam mold first - no joy - so I had to remove it.

Why it didn't squeak for almost a year and just started recently is still a mystery. My wife's theory is the colder weather made the styrofoam mold shrink and move around and thus rub against the steel spare tire rim.

It could also be from the interior mat that lays on top of the polystyrene material is making contact with it now and the rubbing causes it to make noise.

My rattles have been far less than I had expected. I feel as if the chassis bracing I added may have perhaps reduced the chances of rattles, but some may consider that a stretch of the imagination.
