How crazy. Can't think of another car brand that gets stereotyped with political and sexual preference overtures! I mean, no one says Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Nissan, Lexus are politically biased or a gay brand! I have heard the gay reference a lot, and it cracks me up. I'm a 46 year old married white guy who is beginning to budget for my 11 year olds college costs, not to mention her wedding.... but people say "You bought a Subaru? Isn't that a car gay people drive?". Don't care who buys or drives 'hem, just keep the purchase price low, the maintenance easy, and the dependability high!

Great thread and awesome posts lol. I've always heard that Subarus are for hippies, liberals, LGBT, and more recently, "old folk," as a friend put it. I'm with avimia, it's my car, I love it, and I coulda are less what the person behind me thinks about my NRA Life of Duty decal on the back of my XV. I'm a registered Libertarian that used to drive a lifted Silverado with an NRA decal, Afghan Vet decal, USMC plate frame, and Star Wars decals. I sent mixed messages I guess ;D. I think people who drive a Subaru know how to navigate the/their world. 8)

I don't imagine anyone here is actually interested in real data on this topic, as most just want to share their interesting (but statistically meaningless) anecdotes. But there have been surveys. (Of course there have; marketers want to know everything...)

Yes, Subarus are much more likely to be bought by liberals. No, this obviously doesn't mean that all Subaru drivers are liberal. Some are conservative, some are libertarian, some are moderate, and some don't care about politics at all. While the association of Subarus with liberals may be part historical accident, there are also good reasons behind it, not the least of which is good gas mileage for the off-road capability. (Yes, any political orientation can care about gas mileage, but liberals are more likely to.)

Etc.

If you're not a leftist, buying a Subaru will slowly turn you into one.

It's true.

As we were warned by one of the single greatest statement in history:

"Today we are engaged in a final, all-out battle between communistic atheism and Christianity. The modern champions of communism have selected Subaru as their car of choice, and ladies and gentlemen, the chips are down — they are truly down."

Sen. Joesph McCarthy

What to do? If you even trend right, even just a little, sell your Subaru now.

I'm a republican from Louisiana and love my XV. I do get some strange looks/comments when I show up at a mud park or to the hunting camp, but the XV meets my needs perfectly. The day they make a truck with comparable MPG to this, then I'll probably switch. I'm not paying a ridiculous fuel bill when my XV with a trailer still averages better MPG than a mid sized truck.

When I meet new people they always tell me the car doesn't suit me haha.

My son who sells Honda's said people who buy Subaru's are different kind of people! Didn't think much of it until I saw a man coming out of the service center. Who had a brown butch hair cut with a wad of orange hair on his forehead. Carrying a large knapsack hanging on his side, with plaid shorts.

I've certainly heard people put their labels on Subarus (along with everything else) but I must say, as a married father of three I made my decision based solely upon the smartest car decision for my needs. Done and DONE! Loving my XV

The XV is my 3rd Subaru... I'm a reformed GM guy...

I love these discussions where everybody thinks there's a difference between Democrats and Republicans. That their side is right and the other side is just closed-minded.

The political scene in this country is really just a vocal minority grabbing headlines. They get the spotlight so that must be the way the country is. Nobody tunes into Fox News or CNN to gain knowledge and have their mind changed.

Bottom line: the good people still and will always out number the bad in this world and I've never met another Subaru owner who wasn't willing to have a civil conversation.

For the most part, I am very liberal, progressive, whatever you want to call it. I want to see the world move forward, improve the planet while improving our lives, etc. But that has nothing to do with what I drive. Besides my nice XV Hybrid, I also drive a gas-guzzling Wrangler. It gets me to work! The fact that Subarus appeal to many different types of people is pivotal to their success. They know they have a niche, but their buyers are slowly becoming more and more diverse.

And for what it's worth, the management at the Subaru plant in Indiana are extremely conservative, big business right wingers. So be it!

My impression was that Subaru's target audience was the Tree Hugger type. I got this impression from the ads Subaru runs and from some of the Subaru owners I have encountered in the past.

I am a registered independent though I lean conservative mostly. My previous vehicle was a Ford F-250 Diesel and before that a diesel H1 (the real) Hummer. So I probably don't qualify as a Tree Hugger type.

Did I mention I bought the Hybrid? :-/

Funny. I am registered as a Republican although I am thinking of changing to Independent because politics in general has become such a joke. I don't think either side has any choices that are worthwhile...especially this election. God help us.

I have owned nothing but Ford 4X4 trucks for as long as I can remember. When I bought my Subie, wow, you should have heard all my friends busting my chops...calling me a tree hugger. I am still getting friends trying to put Bernie Sanders stickers on my car. LOL All in good fun.

That doesn't sound like a man...that sounds like a Hipster! LOL
