Hello everyone, I am new here and have a doozy first post. I did the drain my cvt fluid instead of engine oil trick. I am feeling pretty stupid about now.My question is I have all the fluid in a new container. If I strain and manage to get it back in the car will that be sufficient?> ITs a 2017 crosstrek with 32k on it. Nearest subaru dealer is 70 miles and not open till tuesday. Guess my question is will I be risking anything by just putting the fluid back? Thank you for your suggestions/help. I saw the thread from 2013 about it but figured I would ask anyway.

I'm no mechanic, but I don't see any reason why it would hurt, as long as the container it drained into and the area around the drain hole was clean.

On the other hand, $200 for new ATF is a lot cheaper than a new transmission.

With my luck in cars, there would be some contamination I didn't know about and the transmission would fail 1 month after the drivetrain warranty expires.

Personally, with such a new car, I wouldn't risk it.

If the container you drained the fluid into was contaminated (and not perfectly clean), there is a potential risk of issues.

Another alternative is to look up compatible CVT fluids to replenish the CVT transaxle:

It seems as long as the aftermarket brand lists the Subaru Lineartronic CVT, the fluid may very well be compatible.

CVT Fluid Drained

I'm embarrassed to admit that I, too, drained the CVT Fluid instead of the oil. Unfortunately, I turned the car on for a few minutes (in Park, did not drive) before calling the mechanic and having them take it to the shop. The Subaru mechanic said that this might be enough to damage the transmission. While I wait for him to take a look at it tomorrow, does anyone have any experience with this? Am I totally screwed? There isn't even 3,000 miles on it...I feel so dumb.

So...what were the results of this situation? I'm hoping there was no damage to the CVT.

I have a 2019 model....there is a skid plate now that just about makes it impossible to drain anything other then the engine oil.

I took it into the shop and they ran a $400 "test" on it that verified that everything was okay before replacing the fluid. I suspect that they didn't really do anything, but it means that my warranty is still valid, so I guess it's worth it, ha.

Be careful out there, guys!
