Hey all!!!
Here is my question, I installed a K&N air filter and noticed inside the airbox there was a fabric piece that seems to maybe restrict the airflow into the engine. Has anyone tried to remove this to open up the breathing of the car? What has been the outcome-good idea or bad idea? I ask only because there is an airfilter already, why have another?
Thanks,
Chuck

Both are a bad idea.
I agree completely. I personally think you should slap the stock paper filter back in (or find a high-flow dry filter, not an oiled filter like a K&N) and leave that paper device alone.

There's a couple threads that discuss that the intake system is fine as it is. If you want to modify your intake, get an engine tune (which is potentially expensive as you may need a new engine management system).

First of all, the oiled filters trap LESS dirt than a paper. Anyone that drives offroad these days has long since sworn off them. When you pull a filter element and you have fine dust in your intake behind the filter then you know you've got a problem. That doesn't happen with a factory paper filter.

Second, air flow in all but a high-performance turbo engine is the same or better with a oem paper.

And worse, if not oiled enough they don't trap dirt well at all, and if over-oiled is likely to foul your MAF sensor in the intake plenum, or worse.

I can't figure out what people think they're gonna gain with this. Leave it alone!! LOL.

Instead, opt for a dry performance filter.

It seems that the filter for the XV is the same one for.. well, very many vehicles.

The 2008-2013 WRX and WRX STI air filters will fit the FB20 in the Subaru XV and Subaru Impreza (GJ/GP).

So according to that, all of these filters will work http://www.rallysportdirect.com/2009-Subaru-Impreza-WRX-2.5L_Replacement-Air-Filter

CONFIRMED: FB20 in Subaru XV can use the drop-in air filters indicated for the 2008-2013 WRX/WRX STI

it seems the application is generally all FB engines and certain late-model EJ engines
