I don't know about you, but I went looking for an off-road capable vehicle that got good gas mileage and was compact. I didn't want a big ol' SUV or even one of the smaller crossovers that appear in the various manufacturers' lineups. Even Jeep Wranglers have gotten wider over the years. If the Outback was still a small wagon, I may have gone that route, but alas, it has grown up and out. Most of my adventures are solo (the wife doesn't hike or surf) and don't require more than space for a backpack. I don't have kids to haul around anymore and a small hatchback is sufficient for both trips to the grocery store and the dog park. And with a roof rack, even our annual car camping trip won't overload the storage capacity. I'm glad the Crosstrek is on the small side and I wouldn't have bought it if it was any bigger.
