Three miles to work is barely enough time for your coolant to get hot let alone to proper operating temperature of approx 200F. I bet it never gets above 145F. Your oil never reaches operating temps since it takes about three time longer to get there. Everyone needs to remember that the mpg rating for the XV (or any other vehicle for that matter) is at proper operating temps.

There's a gal where I work who has a new Impreza; she bought it in November 2013. As of right now, it only has 600 miles on it and she drives it every day. She takes the Max into work so she drives the 7/10 of a mile from her home to the Mac station. She also questioned why she wasn't getting good mpg (she's only filled it twice....). I patiently explained to her that she really needs to take t out on the freeway once a week for 30 miles (at freeway speeds) so it gets to proper operating temps to cook off the moisture in the oil. Even then, I recommended she change the oil at least once every 6 months regardless of the mileage.

I understand all of that but when I can get 16-18 in my trans am doing the same 3 mile trip, it seems ludicrous that the XV can't do a little better. Yeah the V8 warms faster but still.....

We recently went on an 800 mile trek where we used our roof carrier where we averaged 29 mpg. So far no ticking noise, Ill keep my fingers crossed. My question is break in procedures. My salesman told me straight up that the XV did not require any type of break in and I could hit the freeways running. I see a lot of posts talking about break in periods. So what is it?

Your salesperson outright lied in your face. The owner's manual indicates a 1000 mile break-in period, and indicates to keep the revs below 4000RPM and avoid heavy acceleration and extended periods of cruising at the same speed.
 
Thanks for the responses. So it got me thinking and I called the dealership. I spoke to the service department and I asked them about the break in procedure and what the salesman told me. The technician agreed and assured me that as long as you don't go out and "race it" or go a 100 mph your fine. He said freeway speeds were ok. He stated that because the Crosstrek does not have a "turbo application" the break in procedures are not necessary. I can't imagine way or what the reason for lying about it would accomplish unless its a conspiracy to get my car in for service.

Find a more trustworthy one. My salesperson told me the exact break-in period just before driving it off the lot, so I don't have too much distrust for my local dealership.


As for service bulletins, I emailed Subaru of America my VIN and indicated none affect my 2014 XV. I'll continue to be on the lookout for issues if any arise though.
 
I drive my XV everyday to and from work, approx. 28 miles one way(all freeway), so 56 miles per day roughly. I bought mine w/17 miles on it. I have not heard this "tapping" noise yet, however will keep an ear out for it. Right now it has just under 2k miles on it and gets around 28 mpg. Thanks for the heads up. I will have my brother-in-law do some searching as he is an automotive engineer designing electric components for all electric vehicles(designed the system in Neil Young's Lincoln). He is pretty good at finding these things out and what to do about it.
 
First time poster---was googling information on this problem as my 2013 Crosstrek premium was experiencing this problem. I noticed a large drop in mpg and the ticking sound. I thought it was in my head but I dropped the car at the dealer for a checkup. At the time of the problem, I had 20k miles on the engine.

The service department kept my car for a week and had to replace the left side valves and cam. It's been two weeks since and the problem has been corrected.

Bonus was they gave me an orange Xv as a loaner. Man I fell in live with that car. Made finding it in a parking lot super easy lol.

Well I have an update on the issue, 1400 miles later after the left side rebuild its back in the shop for a 2nd rebuild. From what I could gather, they use this sealer called Fuji, and apparently the sealer didnt set properly which caused a leak and excessive oil burning. Plus the tapping didnt go away it was just dulled down, due to them using the wrong size spacers, so Im pretty close to having a lemon.
 
I would think that there has to be some kind of ticking or tapping noise, due to the cams. Plus using the 0W-20 oil doesn't help much, w/it being so thin.

What we're dealing with here is a complete lack of respect for the law.
 
Just to add another data point. I was getting very poor gas mileage. It had dropped to 18 or so in town and barely 25 on the freeway. I tried to bring it up to the dealer but they would not do much with out a CEL. Finally it started throwing a CEL. The code P0302. They were showing oil/fuel mixture issues. Replaced an O2 sensor and the cleared the CEL. About a week later it returned. This time they actually troubleshot the issue and found it to be a bad fuel injector. Replaced the injector, plug and Injector sub assembly.

My in town mileage is now up to 29 MPG. I have only been on the freeway with my bike on top. But even that was 25 MPG. Also, I have not had to add oil. Typically by now I would have needed a quart.

I don't know if they actually did more work than is on the invoice. Most likely not.

It seems that there could be multiple sources for bad mileage and oil consumption. I was having the poor mileage and oil consumption well before the CEL came on for the first time.

I never had the ticking noise. I guess that's why I wanted to add to this thread.

My 2014 5spd has about 2800 miles on it. Oil light just came on yesterday. I'll check the level in the AM (Christmas).. Wonder if I am experiencing the consumption issue, and maybe other related reported issues?
Coincidentally, the second time my low oil light came on was in Livermore. I was a quart low. However, compared to the mileage I had changed the oil, the oil burning was well within Subaru's spec for normal oil consumption.


Also, supposedly model year 2014 and newer XV Crosstrek models should NOT have the oil consumption issues. Make sure your oil consumption is within Subaru of America's tolerances of normal oil consumption before telling your dealer and/or Subaru that you have oil burning issues.
